Addressing Real Life Issues for St Mary's County's Future

Smart Growth & Infrastructure

  • Support development that respects property right also promotes responsible zoning and infrastructure investment.
  • Balance growth with preservation of rural character
  • Invest in roads and transportation
  • Negotiate potential overregulation and unfunded mandates from states and federal government

Public Safety and First Responders

As communities grow, so do demands on fire, EMS, and law enforcement. We need to prioritize funding and support for law enforcement and emergency personnel.

  • Prioritize funding for Sheriff’s Office and EMT services
  • Increase EMT response times throughout the county
  • Engage in strategic planning with Sheriff and States Attorney Offices

Fiscal Responsibility & Low Taxes

Government should live within its means and avoid tax increases.

          • Continue to seek excellence in education

          • Encourage workforce education which promotes trade and technical education opportunities for sustainable careers

Education & Workforce Development

Government should live within its means and avoid tax increases.

          • Avoid tax increases

          • Provide transparent and cost-effective management
          • Encourage public-private partnerships where possible
          • Manage the Capital Improvement Project portion of the budget to reflect both the long-term and short-term needs while keeping within the debt limit goals

Community Comments

Mr. Shepherd’s 40-year career with the St. Mary’s County Government was stellar. Over the past seven years the Department of Recreation and Parks thrived under his leadership. He was devoted to his work and the community. If elected, he has everything it takes to be an effective commissioner with an eye on conservative and practical fiscal management.

Randy Guy, St Mary’s County Commissioner President

Arthur Shepherd has spent his whole adult life looking out for the recreational needs of youth and adults in St. Mary’s County. He has been an instrumental force in leading the development of parks, facilities, and programs that continue to bring our county forward. Arthur genuinely cares about our community and has devoted countless hours volunteering and staying in touch with our needs. I cannot think of a better man to represent the people of St. Mary’s County as one of our County Commissioners.

I hate politics but LOVE this man. For 30 YEARS Art Shepherd has helped me raise $ and awareness for Hospice of St. Mary’s County. Together we have raised over $1Million for hospice with ALL of it staying in St. Mary’s County to assist those in our community facing a terminal illness. Death DOESN’T CARE what your political affiliation is & in the end it does not matter. What matters is humanity – caring for those in our community. Art understands this & GENUINELY cares for our neighbors. THAT is why I will always support Shep.
